Be aware that some swiss cities doesn't like having exhibitions in town after a match. you could disturb the peace in the siss population. Yes, you read it right, Switzerland is today home of the eurofoot 2008, where a ton of peple will join to party together, and ths will be forbidden, except in some controlled areas. Switzerland is a calm, cold and strict country.
Following this, some cities reinforced their laws (often helped by the eurofoot sponsors I suppose). don't think the swiss citizen are against partying.. no juste the administration. So if you plan to come, here is a small list of what you may find on site :
- No other drink that the sponsored ones are allowed in the restricted areas. On kind of (no even swiss) beer has been "chosen", and one Cola. If you're desire is for spring water, forget about it.
- You'll be allowed to drink in plastic glass. Something very envirronemental in this pure Switzerland.
- Comedy sketches dealing about football have been canceled by sponsors arguing that it's not fair to laugh about football.
- In some cities, you will not be able to show your happiness, cars will be forbidden.
- Some cities will reinforce the law about silence after 10pm.
- You will be alllowed to wear only official sponsored clothes in restricted areas
- Except for Geneva, not special plan have been ade for city transportation.
But swiss are striking their way, like fencing all sponsored bars, so people are free to choose other places with freedom of choice.
You're coming to eurofoot 08 ? Are you sure you want to party ?
June 6th update :
Geneva :
- City buses will be available up to 2am.
- City buses between fanzones and fanvillages will be free of charge.
Canton of Vaud (Lausanne, Morges, Montreux...) :
- No car is allowed in some city centers. Only pedestrians will be able to enter.
After some weeks, I'm finally at my new flat ! No more in France but in Switzerland... Country of Gruyère cheese and chocolate. But this is not the point of the move here today. I'm planning to build a "multimedia corner" in my living room. Many questions are arriving, and honeslty I don't know yet exactly what to choose.
First : TV.
- My building is not cabled, so no cable TV possible,
- My building has no antenna on the roof,
- My flat is in an old area where satellite dishes are prohibited,
- I may subscribe to ADSL TV to get around 120 channels.
Now.... Should / will I take TV at home ? This means :
- I don't watch TV that much, I'm used to do other things at the same time (mostly surfing the web),
- the cost of ADSL TV is 19 CHF/month (that's 19 USD too),
- the federal tax for watching TV is 23 CHF/month (23 USD)
First question : is it worth ? I'm currently experiencing the no-TV-at-all at home, and I'm quite ok. I'm watching Videos podcast on Miro.
Second : Media Center
For the moment I'm using my macbook to watch videos, listen to online radios. Now... A perfect solution to avoid my laptop to be connected/disconnected all the time, is to use a medai center... but which one ?
- I looked at multimedia disks. But they are firstly a way to store files via USB. This means that you need to plug the disk to your computer, copy files, then go back to you living room and plug the disk to the TV set... How easy ! I only find 2 multimedia disks that connects through ethernet. But they need to be filed by a computer.
- So I was looking to standalone multimedia solutions. The only one I see for the moment is the Apple TV. It can synchronize podcast, can listen to music... without having to start my linux box. But the odwn side of it is the poor size of the hard drive.... (60 GB for the higher model)
- Aftersome research I find that a lot of people have used their Mac mini as a media center. This seem a nice solution as it's a computer, ok more expensive than a multimeda disk, but can do all want I need (and even more). Possible downside : how to use the remote control with Miro of other software ?
Any suggestion is welcome !
Tonight, I switched on the TV set and zapped from channel to channel to find my evening film. I select i, Robot... and.... Midsomer murders.... As I already watched the first, I started with Barnaby :)
Midsomer Murders is a british serie, about Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby trying to resolve murders in and around the city of Midsomer.
Surprisingly I like this series, and still wondering why ! The pliot is taking place in a very small town, where almost nothing is happening except murders. No crash actions, no speed cars, bullet shot. Actually it may be amost boring, silent and slow. May be this lack of action is what I like.. hummm...
Ok, shhh... the film is continuing, I want to know the murderer.

As you know, I got a Powerbook (blue/white) for just a little more than 1 year. I tried to install Tiger (10.4) without success. Tried Panther with more or less chance. A mnth ago I tried again to install Tiger. It failed.
SO I reinstalled Panther (10.3), twice, 33 time... It always fails at the same moment : during the installation of the packages Essentials.pkg (so theing like that). I tried with another Panther disc (fro a friend) the error is still here : Header is missing.
Soooooo.... I decide to install Jaguar (10.2), and it's a success :) But, the happiness didn't last long. The auto update fauled installing the the 10.2.8 Combo update. I downloaded the 10.2.8 combo update, then installed manually. After the reboo, when the desktop should appear, I only get a ble screen. The pointer is moving, the screensver is working fine, and the keyboard is responding well.
I thought I may should update first jaguar to 10.2.1 or 10.2.2. But ON Apple download site is only available the 10.2.4 combo update file. I reinstall from scratch Jaguar from the CDs, then installed the 10.2.4 combo update. After reboot, and the splash screen, I only get a blue screen like with 10.2.8 update :(
Does anybody knows if I can install Jaguar on a powerbook g3 ? And if Panther can be install properly ? And why do I have so much difficulties installing ?
When I lean about the Macs when I was young, The System 1 and the followers had one particularity. It was challenging the use of memory, for a graphical improvement. By the time, memory was expensive, and the use of less memory as possible was a rule. but Apple decided to get beyond this, and make whar the GUI was.
Surprisingly, with the arrival of MacOS 10.5 (Leopard), this feature was removed silently, and I really surprised, nobody cared about this ! A side of Apple's history is gone without any comment. I'am sad about this change.
Do you know what's changed in Leopard ?
The seventh season of "American Idol" premieres tonight. Will you be watching, or are you over it?
No, Just because, I'm not in the USA, and American Idol is not here :)
I'm one of the "new switchers"... even if I don't consider myself as a switcher.... I'm primarily using Ubuntu as desktop and server. Now for several years Do I switch to use a OS X ? I don't think so. OS X is replacing Windows as it has the same applications (iTunes, Lightroom, Photoshop)
Now a lot of people are asking why should they buy a mac. I explain my reasons as Ben asked yesterday on Pownce. Here is my answers :
I bought a macbook in December 2007 for 2 reasons :
1 - the former PC laptop (an Acer) was 3.5 Kg weight (7 pounds ?). It just broke my shoulder last summer... I wanted a lightweight laptop.
2 - I didn't want to give too much money, and get a too powerful laptop. Power that I would not use.
Result : the macbook is (in December) the cheapest 13" laptop. The Sony Vaios were 500 Euro more expensive. the macbook is 2.5kg (5 pounds ?) is ok. I didn't want a ultraportable.
I bought it in Switzerland for 1800 CHF (1300 Euro), instead of France (1445 Euro).
OS X is simple but you can go deeper in the system if you want to get more of it. Of course you need sometimes to think differently than with Windows, but that's because OS X is not Windows, nor Linux :)
The features that allows you to remotely access a hard drive is not only a OS X feature.... Or I misunderstood your sentence.
I've a macbook but still have my Ubuntus as desktop computers and both (OS X and Ubuntu) are talking to each other in harmony.
So what happened last December is : I bought a black Macbook in Lausanne.
After some reflections, posting and feedback I decided to by this black pearl ;) Being in Geneva by the time, I tried to get one here. But guess what, there were no available in any shops ! All vendors told me that being close to Christmas all stock were empty. The week end coming, I went to Lausanne (60km east from Geneva,by the lake). And going to the FNAC, I asked the Genius at the Apple Bar, who replied that 8 pieces of Macbook were waiting ! I just took one :) It was Saturday. I was happy to play during the whole week end.
So, now.. what am I doing with it : primarily using for work, as note taking application, and for my search of flat. I use it also to check all my mails as the office network is blocking almost all ports (even secured ones) for security measures.
I think I did the right thing to buy this macbook, it's small (13 inches), rather lighweight (2.5 kg), start rather fast (30 sec), well everything I want for my new laptop.
About the price, I paid around 150 Euro less in Swizerland than in France....
This last summer 2007, I used a lot my Acer laptop. I had to have it with me when in Grenoble. It weight 3.5kg (7 pounds ?) and had a screen size of 15.4 inch. It really broke my shoulders. After this mission I started to look for smaller and lighter laptop.
I found the MacBook (not the pro) to be the best compromise between price and weight. I don't mind the OS. I'm using Windows XP, any flavor of linux, and handle OSX rather good (I think ;) )
I'm ready then to buy the Macbook when.... 3 days ago, I visit a friend who showed me a bunch of new cool small laptop (screensize from 12 to 14 inches, less than 2 kg) ! Prices starting under 1000 Euro (I don't know where the US dollar is now..) up to 1400 Euro, price of the highest macbook.... Basically ultralight laptop over 1000 Euro, have some better hardware than the mac : own graphic card (Nvidia or ATI, with own memory), 2 to 4 GB or RAM.
Now, I'm.... disappointed :) Should I get a PC laptop (12-14 inches screensize) or a macbook. Asus or Samsung seem to very nice.
Has anybody any advices ?
NB : I'm using primarily linux as OS on a PC based computer. I'm bored to hack the OS so wifi is recognized or the graphic card has no 3D.... So if it's a PC laptop, it should handle wifi, 3D effect (compiz fusion) like anthing else.
